“1942” is a vertically scrolling shooter arcade game developed by Capcom and released in 1984. Created by Yoshiki Okamoto, it is the pioneering title in the 194X series, followed by “1943: The Battle of Midway.” Set during World War II in the Pacific Theater, the game draws loose inspiration from the Battle of Midway, but with an interesting twist—despite its Japanese development, the game’s objective is to reach Tokyo and destroy the Japanese air fleet. This unusual perspective was chosen to appeal to Western markets, marking Capcom’s first game targeted specifically at these audiences. The game achieved significant commercial success, ranking as Japan’s fifth highest-grossing table arcade game in 1986 and among the top five arcade conversion kits in the United States the same year. “1942” was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System and other home platforms, selling over 1 million copies globally. In “1942,” players control an aircraft called the “Super Ace” (modeled after the Lockheed P-38 Lightning), tasked with shooting down enemy planes and dodging incoming fire. Collisions or hits from enemy aircraft result in the loss of a life. Throughout the game, players can collect power-ups, one of which enables the plane to be flanked by two smaller fighters in a Tip Tow formation, enhancing firepower and protection. Enemy planes include models like Kawasaki Ki-61s, Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, and Kawasaki Ki-48s, with the Nakajima G10N serving as the boss plane.
