Rayman: Hoodlums’ Revenge is a unique entry in the Rayman series, developed by Backbone Entertainment and published by Ubisoft for the Game Boy Advance in 2005. It stands out as the first Rayman game to adopt an isometric platforming perspective, set after the events of Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc.
Gameplay
“Rayman: Hoodlums’ Revenge” combines traditional platforming with puzzle elements, creating a dynamic gameplay experience. Players navigate Rayman, and in some levels, Globox—or switch between both characters—to traverse the game’s isometric levels. Rayman retains his signature abilities, such as attacking, hover jumping, and climbing, while also engaging in new tasks like tracking down switches to progress through levels.
The objective in each level is to complete various tasks such as collecting gems and lums, freeing Teensies, and defeating enemies. These actions award points that contribute to the player’s score at the end of each level. Achieving high scores earns players “Murfy” stamps, which can be used to unlock additional levels, enhancing replayability.
Plot
The game begins tranquilly, with Rayman and Globox asleep in a forest. The peace is disrupted when Globox awakens, troubled by memories of swallowing the Black Lum André and hearing mysterious sounds. As Globox disappears, possibly captured by the Hoodlums, Rayman wakes up to find him missing and sets out on a rescue mission.
Guided by Murfy, Rayman learns that the Hoodlums are attempting to clone Reflux, a powerful adversary from “Rayman 3.” This clone is powered by plum juice, produced by an Infernal Machine that Rayman must destroy. Along the journey, the influence of André causes Globox to exhibit unusual aggression and mockery, creating tension and humor in their interactions.
Ultimately, the adventure leads Rayman through various challenges, including rescuing Teensies and overcoming bosses. The climax occurs in the Pit of Endless Fire, where after defeating the Firemonster, André fully takes control of Globox, only to be defeated shortly after. The game concludes with Rayman overcoming the cloned Reflux and André’s spirit fleeing, leaving Globox to innocently inquire about breakfast. The duo then walks off into the forest, marking a light-hearted end to their adventure.
