Released in 1990 by Natsume, “Shadow of the Ninja” (known in Japan as “Yami no Shigotonin Kage” and in Europe and Australia as “Blue Shadow”) is a distinguished side-scrolling action game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game is set in a dystopian 2029 where the United States has fallen under the tyrannical rule of Emperor Garuda. From his stronghold in America’s “largest city,” Garuda’s reign has been marked by oppression and violence.
Story and Characters:
Players are thrust into the dark world of “Shadow of the Ninja” as either Lord Hayate or Lady Kaede, two skilled ninjas from the Iga clan. Their mission is clear: infiltrate Emperor Garuda’s heavily fortified lair and end his tyrannical rule to avenge the innocent lives he has destroyed. Players can choose to tackle this mission solo or in a cooperative two-player mode, with no performance differences between the characters aside from their appearance—Hayate dons purple, while Kaede sports orange.
Gameplay Mechanics:
The gameplay of “Shadow of the Ninja” is rich with typical and innovative action-platform elements. Players can run, jump, crouch, climb, and use a variety of attacks to overcome enemies and obstacles. Unique to the game is the ability to hang from and move along overhangs, adding a strategic layer to navigating levels.
A notable feature is the ability to perform a powerful special attack—a thunderstorm that damages all on-screen enemies—at the cost of half the player’s maximum vitality, provided they have more than half remaining. This risk-reward element adds depth to the combat situations.
Weapons and Power-ups:
Players start with a katana and can switch to a kusarigama, each weapon offering distinct advantages. The katana is ideal for close combat, while the kusarigama provides longer range and the ability to attack diagonally, though it’s less effective up close. Weapons can be upgraded up to three levels for enhanced power, but taking damage may reduce the weapon’s strength. Additional weapons like shuriken and grenades can be collected, offering temporary ranged attack options until the player’s ammunition runs out.
Levels and Progression:
The game spans five levels broken into fourteen stages, with the majority of the levels divided into three stages and the final level comprising two stages. Each level is populated with a variety of enemy types, including formidable bosses and sub-bosses. Defeating a boss not only progresses the game but also triggers an explosion that can heal the player if they are close enough, adding a tactical element to boss encounters. Health can also be replenished with potions found throughout the levels.
